B-Cell Receptor: IgM Structure

Writer: Joy BREWERJoy BREWER

This drawing depicts the Immunoglobulin M isotype (IgM) of a B-cell receptor (BCR). As depicted, Igα/Igβ still contain Immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs (ITAM). However, studies show that IgM BCRs differ from the soluble pentameric IgM in a number of ways. First, as shown in the drawing, the Igα/Igβ heterodimer sandwich one of the heavy chain transmembrane domains. Additionally, there are 14 glycosylation sites, eight on the heterodimers and 6in the constant region (Fc).
